TL;DR
What does a conversion rate optimization consultant do?
A conversion rate optimization consultant finds what stops visitors from converting on your site, then A/B tests fixes so you keep only the changes that win.
- Tests start in week 2, and the audit research runs alongside them: an analytics review, user testing against a competitor, a poll, heatmaps and session recordings.
- A senior consultant leads every engagement, with analysts, developers and QA who build and check every test.
- We’ll use Nantu, our free testing tool, if you don’t have one, and we’re experienced with whatever testing tool you’re already using.
Bottom line: a senior consultant leads the work, and a team builds and checks every test.
The job has a few parts, and a good consultant does all of them:
- Research: analytics, heatmaps, session recordings and user tests show where people drop off and why.
- Each test idea comes with a reason it should move the number.
- The change gets built, checked and run against the current page with real traffic.
- Winners get kept. Losers get explained, and both feed the next test.
Expert, specialist and consultant are used for the same role. Our guide to what a CRO expert is covers how the labels get used. The rest of this page is about conversion rate optimization consulting with us.
Not the job
What doesn’t a CRO consultant do?
A CRO consultant doesn’t bring you more traffic, rebuild your site on a hunch, or promise that every test will win.
- It doesn’t bring in traffic. That’s SEO and paid media. CRO works on what visitors do once they’re on the site.
- It doesn’t ship redesigns without testing them. An untested redesign can lower conversion, and you won’t know which change did it.
- It doesn’t win every test. Plenty of tests lose, and a loss still tells you what not to ship.
- A list of recommendations doesn’t test anything. Someone still has to design, build, QA and launch each test. We do that part.
When to hire
When should you hire a CRO consultant?
Hire one when you’re paying for traffic that isn’t converting and you have about 60 meaningful conversion actions a month to test with.
The usual signs:
- Traffic is steady or growing, and conversion isn’t moving.
- You’ve changed pages and the numbers didn’t move, or you can’t tell which change did what.
- You can see people dropping out of the funnel, but not which step loses them.
- Nobody on your team owns testing, so ideas sit in a backlog.
- A redesign is coming and you want to know what works before you build it.
When to hold off: the two cases below. In both, testing would take months to read a result.
A good fit
- Sites with about 60 meaningful conversion actions a month or more
- Teams that want tests built and run, with someone senior deciding what to test
- Teams with a testing tool already, or none at all
Not a fit yet
- A small site that has never done CRO. A one-time best-practices pass from a freelancer can make sense first.
- Sites below about 60 meaningful conversion actions a month. Audit and research work fits better than A/B testing there.
What’s included
What do CRO consulting services include?
Research, A/B tests built from it, a testing tool, and reporting on every test.
A CRO audit
An analytics review, user testing against a competitor, a poll, heatmaps and session recordings. The audit is a prioritized list of fixes.
A/B tests from the audit’s list
Later tests come from the audit. We design, build, QA and launch tests from the top of that list, read the results, and keep only the changes that win. We prioritize pages with the most traffic and drop-off first.
Your testing tool, or ours
We’ll use Nantu if you don’t have a testing tool, and we’re experienced with whatever testing tool you’re already using.
A progress report on every test
You get a progress report on every test: what ran, the result, and what we test next.
What we need from your team: analytics access and a contact who can approve tests. How the testing program runs. Want a first look before an engagement? Get a free Quick Wins audit.
How it works
What does a CRO consulting engagement look like?
A kickoff, early tests while the audit research runs, then a steady loop of mockup, build, QA, launch and readout.
Kickoff
We send an intake form with questions about your business, then hold a kickoff call to go over it and pick the first test.
First tests
Tests start in week 2, picked at kickoff, while the audit research runs.
Mockup, build, QA, preview
You review a mockup first. Developers build the test, QA checks it, and you get a preview link before it goes live.
Meetings
Each meeting covers the tests that are running, how they’re doing, what’s next, and your feedback on what’s being built.
The audit and the backlog
The audit is a prioritized list of fixes. We recommend the order, you can swap a test for another one, and the backlog keeps growing as the program runs.
Winners go live
A winning version can be served to all your traffic through the testing tool until it’s built into your site.
Testing
How does a good CRO consultant pick and run tests?
From research on your own site, a few changes at a time, run long enough to trust, and checked on every browser.
- The research is user testing: we send users to your site, record their screens, give them a scenario and ask them questions. Analytics, heatmaps and session recordings fill in the rest.
- The audit splits its findings into changes to just make (things that are broken, or best practices) and a shorter list to test, because those could hurt as well as help.
- Each test changes a few elements, not a whole page. If you change everything and it loses, you don’t know what was good and what was bad.
- Every test runs at least two full weeks, because people behave differently on different days of the week.
- We QA every test across browsers with LambdaTest and read results by browser, so a bug in one browser doesn’t hide a good result.
- At around 60 meaningful conversion actions a month, we also track engagement and micro conversions to augment the primary KPI.
Consultant, agency or in-house
Should you hire a CRO consultant, an agency or an in-house team?
It depends on your traffic and your team: a freelancer for a first pass, an outside team once you can test, or your own team if you can staff it.
| Where you are | What fits |
|---|---|
| A small site that has never done CRO | A one-time best-practices pass from a freelancer can make sense first. |
| Below about 60 meaningful conversion actions a month | Audit and research work fits better than A/B testing. |
| About 60 meaningful conversion actions a month or more | A testing program with a team behind it, from an agency or a consultant backed by one. |
| An in-house team without the bandwidth to run a full testing program | Bring in an outside team. Teams without the bandwidth to run a full testing program plug us in. |
Building a program in-house means hiring for every part of it: research, design, development, QA and analysis, plus a testing tool. The full comparison of experts, specialists, consultants and agencies is in our guide to hiring a CRO expert.
Who leads the work
Who leads a ConversionTeam consulting engagement?
A senior consultant leads every engagement, with analysts, developers and QA who build and check every test.
The founder behind the team
Devon Cox, Founder & President
Devon Cox is Founder & President of ConversionTeam, which has been doing conversion rate optimization for more than 18 years. He holds a B.S. in Business and Computer Science from Boston College and an MBA in Marketing & Entrepreneurship from the University of Colorado Boulder.
Devon also built Nantu, an open-source enterprise A/B testing platform, because the existing tools didn’t meet the standards his team needed. Devon is based in Denver, Colorado.
You work directly with the consultant who leads your engagement. They run the audit and the test plan and join the readouts. The team includes analysts, copywriters, designers, developers and QA.
Cost
What does a CRO consultant cost?
Published rates on the consultant pages we reviewed run $75 to $300 an hour, $5,000 to $20,000 a month on retainer, and $8,000 to $25,000 for a project.
What moves the price:
- How many pages, funnels and sites are in the program
- How many tests run at the same time
- Whether design, development and QA are included, or your team does them
- Whether you pay for a testing tool on top (Nantu, our testing tool, is free)
For our price, book a call.
Published prices checked in October 2026.
How to choose
How do you choose a CRO consultant?
Ask what research their tests come from, whether they show losing tests, who builds and checks each test, and what they need from your team.
| Question to ask | ConversionTeam |
|---|---|
| What research do their tests come from? | An audit that runs alongside the first tests: analytics, user testing against a competitor, a poll, heatmaps and session recordings. |
| Do they publish a win rate and show losing tests? | 8,000+ A/B tests run, with a 61.1% win rate and the method published. You get a progress report on every test: what ran, the result, and what we test next. |
| Who builds and checks the tests? | Analysts, developers and QA build and check every test. |
| Will you work with the person who leads? | Yes. The consultant who leads your engagement runs the audit and the test plan and joins the readouts. |
| What do they need from your team? | Analytics access and a contact who can approve tests. |
| Who pays for the testing tool? | Nantu, our testing tool, is free. We also work in the tool you already use. |
| Is there a guarantee? | Yes, the 30% lift guarantee below, on the same terms as our Iterate program. |
Red flags
- The test list is a stock list of ideas, not research on your site.
- They only show you the winners.
- Every test is a full-page redesign, so a win or a loss teaches you nothing specific.
- Nobody on their side builds or QAs the tests. You get a deck.
- They call a test after a few days.

An outstanding experience. When we went looking for help optimizing conversions, two people I hold in the highest regard - who don't even know each other - both recommended Devon. We've been blown away by their expertise, professionalism, and results.
Responsive, timely, and the results and expertise speak for themselves. We bring them in across multiple client engagements.
Devon is a real CRO rockstar. He looks at a site and immediately hones in on the opportunities for improvement, and backs up every recommendation with testing. Highly recommend.
Mike BelascoFounder & AdvisorThey provide elaborate reporting on every test, with clear KPIs where we can identify winners to implement - conversion-rate increases, more ecommerce purchases, and higher engagement. Communication is easy and their project management is excellent.
Devon was a great partner when we needed to improve our website's user experience. His team gave us a thorough audit of our top pages and a free heatmapping tool we still use today. Highly recommend, especially if you're in lead gen.
Working through tests with ConversionTeam has been great. Their project management is top-notch, and their knowledge base is what stands out - we have no plans to change the relationship any time soon.
ConversionTeam was excellent to work with and delivered exactly what we were looking for. They ran a CRO audit of our site; their insight was incredibly valuable and helped us advance toward our goals with confidence. Professional, organized, and thorough.
ConversionTeam has had a significant impact on our conversion rate - a good uplift, and especially an increase in revenue. We're impressed with their personalized approach and deep understanding of our needs.
We're seeing 210x ROI and a 22% lift in conversion rate - it's hard to measure all of their impact. We sold out of almost all our stock; we weren't ready for the lift they'd provide. They run a tight ship and always come to meetings prepared.
I couldn't be more impressed. Their team ran an in-depth audit that identified high-value opportunities, then a game plan of A/B tests to validate them - and nearly every test they recommended outperformed the control. Rigorous and data-driven, no guesswork.
We've worked with ConversionTeam since 2018 and are very happy. Their collaborative spirit and out-of-the-box ideas have significantly amplified our CRO efforts and added new dimensions to our strategy.
